The Basingstoke Bison do it for The Soldiers' Charity
22 February 2010
The Basingstoke Bison cruised to 6-1 victory over their visiting local rivals the Bracknell Bees in a special game for ABF The Soldiers’ Charity as part of our Value for Valour initiative.
Only visitor’s man-of-the-match Adam Marashi stopped his side going home more soundly beaten, as the Herd hot shots fired in bullets from all angles.
With a bumper crowd of 1,176, off the ice also proved a great success as the Bison used the game to support the Value for Valour programme, with proceeds from the evening going to ABF The Soldiers’ Charity.
As a tribute to the troops the Herd wore specially designed camouflaged jerseys and the Bees were completely out manoeuvred by them all night.
Ondrej Lauko scored with his first raid in the enemy’s lines after 65 seconds.
From there the home side mounted wave after wave of attacks, with captain Nicky Chinn and Shaun Thompson making it 3-0.
The Bees’ lone strike arrived before the first buzzer came from Michal Pinc, but after the break Chris Wiggins fired home to restore the three goal advantage.
Tony Redmond added a fifth goal with a bouncing bomb, which flew over the glove hand of Marashi, before Slovak sniper Lauko to wrap up the victory.
The game also started with the national anthem being played a lone piper and drummer.
Value for Valour is an exciting new initiative run by ABF The Soldiers’ Charity to encourage sports stadia to offer 2-for-1 tickets to soldiers. The list of supporters is growing rapidly and so far includes Ascot Racecourse, Leyton Orient FC and AFC Fylde amongst many others. Read more about Value for Valour
